Let’s hope 19 and Interscope do’t stick him with some shitty contract that will artistically stifle him. I don’t think he could put up with that kind of fuckery.
They managed to do right with Haley, so hopefully they’ll afford the same amount of artistic control to Phillip! And I really hope that his fans stick around and buy his album. I will be sad if he gets Lee level sales.
ugh yes to the part about instruments. it makes me sad that these vocalists are discredited and not seen as original or artistic. their ‘instrument’ is their powerhouse voice and that should be good enough, instruments are just a nice added bonus.
Not playing an instrument has become a great disadvantage to the vocalists on the show. It’s really unfair that people are quick to label them as “unoriginal” or “copycat singers” just because they do not have a guitar in their possession. I’ve also noticed that when females contestants add some creativity to their performance, they almost never get credit for doing so…
As far as “Home” goes…I liked it, but I always thought it was a bit too folksy for him. What he described his album as is exactly what I expected, so I’m happy! Lol
It’s tough because I actually prefer his folksy sound to his jazzy/rock sound, but perhaps his album will end up representing all those sides! I’m interested to hear his original songs though since he seems so determined to release them on his album! :)
IMO, Phillip should have won. And all i can really do it judge it season by season, not look at what happened last season. Frankly, due to the past, I don’t think anyone from this season is going to go on to be a big star, but maybe they’ll surprise me.
That’s fair to judge season by season. I just can’t help but think of the trends that have occurred on these more recent seasons of Idol. Phillip’s win further proves that contestants who identify with the singer/songwriter genre will always have the advantage over vocalists like Jessica, Joshua, and Hollie (which is not to say that they aren’t artists as well - which is another thing that bothers me - how the judges fail to recognize the creativity of contestants who do not play an instrument on the show). Everything changed when instruments and artistry became favoured on the show, and there’s a portion of the Idol audience who would like to see a return to the days when powerhouse vocals could win you the top prize.
I can see Jessica and Skylar finding success in their respective musical genres - R&B/Urban/Soul and Country/Rock. Joshua and Hollie have great potential - they just need the right producers who can help them with defining their sound/image. Phillip will do well - although I am a little unsettled by his comments that “Home” is not definitive of what his album will sound like. I thought that was a good fit for him!
